“From Crust to Core- The Alchemy of Teaching”by Dr. Pramila Kudva

Dr. Pramila Kudva is a Ph.D. in Education from the Mumbai University. She has worked as a teacher, teacher educator, and as principal. She has trained over 4000 teachers in various aspects of teaching. She has several publications to her credit. She is the author of the book From Chalk To Talk: The Art Of Teaching.

Let’s dive into the interview with the author:

Can you tell us a little about your book?

It is a book built on the NEP requirements. It addresses the techniques to meet the curriculum transaction. These techniques have been broadly categorised under collaborative, activity based, integrated and techniques that lead to scientific temper. The book also deals with assessment practices viz. Assessment for, of and as learning. Finally, it ends with the 360-degree report card.

Is there a specific event that inspired this story or was this an out-of-the-blue idea?

An ex- student of mine sent me a message which said Die Empty! I realised it had a profound meaning. In the sense that we must share our knowledge before we move on. Indian scriptures also tell us about it. Bhismapitamaha shared his wisdom with the kauravas and pandavas from his bed of arrows. Rama sent Lakshmana to Ravana to learn from him as he was ling on his death bed. This prompted me to write the first as well as the second book.

What was your impression of your first draft when you read it?

I don’t want to indulge in ‘myselfing’ if I may say so. It was done with a. purpose of making it easy for the teaching community to adapt to the NEP requirements. I think it has met the objective.

Which part of your story connects the most with you? Why?

I believe in this and I would say it resonates with my ideology.

What makes your book the one to read?

It is the requirement of the day. Need of the hour. It is always nice to fall back on a hard copy to refer. Experienced teachers, freshers both can refer to it. It is a book built on my experiences as a teacher, teacher educator and as a principal for almost 4 decades.

What was the best advice you got while writing?

Keep it simple and to the point. I was also told that the book should not be bulky. Teachers don’t have time to read and might get put off by the bulky book.

Do you have another plot brewing?

A little too premature to answer that.
