A School Where Teachers Reimagine Education for Children with Visual Impairment

Every year we celebrate Teachers Day on 5 September, a day that allows us to slow down and take a moment to celebrate the numerous ways in which teachers contribute to our lives. Children with visual impairment are unfortunately among those who get disproportionately affected and excluded from classrooms, both online and offline, for a variety of reasons.

The story of the teachers of – Saksham School and trainers in Saksham office – a small community school located in Noida district of Uttar Pradesh changes this picture in our mind. During the pandemic, learning for children with visual impairment not only continued at Saksham School but also thrived thanks to the commitment of its teachers who led the students and their parents in this crisis. Teachers not only proved to be the backbone of the system but also stepped up their efforts multifold, often going above and beyond their call of dutyvable to continue their education.

Whether it was ensuring the students and their parents were safe or connecting with their students through WhatsApp audio or video calls and conducting classes on zoom, the teachers ensured the planning for the new academic session went as effectively as before. A music and physiotherapist also conducted easy activities for parents to do with their children through a live-stream session so that the children did not miss out on having fun.

Since children with visual impairment rely heavily on the sense of touch, the teachers designed special lessons and activities that actively involved their parents too. Since some of the students of Saksham are also part of mainstream schools, the teachers provided support to these students in getting familiar with the online teaching of their schools and completing their assignments and notes. Interestingly it is this embracing of technology, not just by the students who learn digital literacy in mainstream script along with braille at the school but also by the teachers themselves that has enabled the reimagination of education at Saksham.

As education transforms itself in India and all of us adapt to the post-COVID world, we hope we continue to actively involve teachers to reinvent the education system to keep the focus on the child’s learning needs. For now, the teachers of Saksham School and trainers and helpline groups give us a glimpse into the possibilities of a brighter world. We hope you join us in giving virtual wishes and greetings to all our special teachers, a tiny gesture for their huge contributions!

Wishing everyone a very happy teachers’ day.
